You shall ride for miles on country roads amongst silent pine and beech forests and you shall enjoy the almost unreal peace and tranquillity of places apparently located out of time.
Departing from Grado, getting across villages like Doberdò, with its ghost lake, or Stanjel, with its enchanting medioeval burg and castle, and crossing a 2° cathegory border between Italy and Slovenja, this tour will lead you to the unspoilt Trnovo’s Forest, which, together with the next Banjšice (Bainsizza) high-plain, form the most North-Western section of the Dinaric Alps. The mountain area comprising the Trnovo Forest is carsic, without any surface running water-streams, full of burroni, various altitude hills and real mountains, caves, abysses, grooves and little carsic fenomena, among which the permanent ice and snow caves are the most impressive.
The Great Paradana cave, 385m deep and 1550m long is one of the most renown examples in the world: in the past ice blocks extracted here were transported even as far as Egypt.
The Trnovo Forest has two natural parks, or protected natural areas: Paradana with its natural monument of the great permanent ice and snow cave and the Golaki Mountain (1495m) with Smrekova draga and the natural monument named Smrečje.

On the steep border of the Trnovo Forest, overlooking the Lijak brook, a rocky shoulder originated the Skozno’s natural bridge. The natural bridge, almost 15m long and 10m high, originated in the same period as the cave and it’s an extension of the arch located above the cave, which is 15m long. From this protruding shoulder you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the Vipava river vale and the Friulian flat land.
Locals narrate that General Borojevič, Austrian chief commander in the First World War, used to watch a section of the Gorizia’s battlefiled from there.
